Its clear a new (or perhaps complimentary at worst) model for TV distribution is in the works.
One example of many. Bittorrent, iTunes, AOL, all emerging non-standard broadcast models.
A model that I thought would be helpful for the networks is to distribute through iTunes or the web ~all~ new shows and pilots. This will allow them to both create and measure buzz.
This is already essentially the case with many Japanese Anime shows. The translate and download community essentially test markets nearly all Anime shows in the US and the rest of the world. Essentially one could have easily predicted the success of Cartoon Networks “Naruto” because more than 200,000 people weekly overcame the hassles of bittorrent and watching shows on their PC/laptops to get their weekly fix.
